How do you get started?

It's simple to apply for a job at the BOE.

To begin, please visit CalCareers to view the available BOE career opportunities that interest you. Read the job bulletin to see the qualifications needed. Each job bulletin also contains salary information, minimum qualifications, and application instructions. Instructions vary so it's important to read each job bulletin carefully.

Once you have reviewed and have determined you are qualified to apply for the position, click on the "Apply Now" button near the top of the screen of the job bulletin. It will ask you if you "can apply for this job?" If you have not taken an examination or self-assessment for the specific job classification, click on "I want to obtain eligibility" to take the examination or self-assessment.

You must first take an examination or self-assessment for the specific job classification. It is required that you pass the examination or self-assessment before applying for the position. This is to ensure that hiring is merit-based, and that new hires or promotions are based on job-related qualifications.

There are two types of examinations: open and promotional.

  • Open examinations are open to anyone meeting the minimum qualifications listed on the exam bulletin for the classification regardless of their current place of employment.
  • Promotional examinations are limited to current or recent BOE employees with permanent status who meet the minimum qualification listed on the exam bulletin for the classification.

After you have completed and passed the exam or self-assessment, candidates receive a final score and are placed on the eligibility list. You are now eligible to start applying for the position by creating a CalCareer Account. Follow the prompts to complete the application.
