Board of Equalization Members to Host Public Hearing to Discuss Opportunities, Challenges, and Emerging Issues in Property Tax Administration

San Diego - The public is invited to attend and share their ideas and concerns related to property tax with Members of the State Board of Equalization (BOE) at the “Modernizing California's Property Tax System – Part I” informational hearing on Thursday, September 19, 2019, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The hearing, being held in cooperation with San Diego County Assessor Ernest Dronenburg, will be held at the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, Third Floor Board Room, 3225 North Harbor Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92101.

This hearing will be hosted by BOE Members Malia Cohen (Chair), Antonio Vazquez (Vice Chair), Ted Gaines, Mike Schaefer, and Betty T. Yee (State Controller). It will be the first of four public informational hearings that will occur throughout the state to provide the opportunity for BOE Members to engage with Californians regarding property tax administration opportunities, challenges, and emerging issues; workforce capacity and planning; and the potential impacts of the split roll property tax initiative.

“I highly encourage members of the public to come out to this informational hearing,” Vice Chair Antonio Vazquez stated. “It will be a great opportunity for them to learn more about property tax administration in California and to share their thoughts on property tax issues with the Board.”

The public informational hearings are a part of the Board's new Modernization Project that was approved on August 27, 2019, to ensure a fair, effective, and efficient property tax administration that safeguards taxpayers' rights – including businesses, nonprofits, and homeowners.

Elected on November 6, 2018, Board Member Antonio Vazquez is the Third District Member of the California State Board of Equalization, representing more than 9.5 million residents in Los Angeles, a portion of San Bernardino, and Ventura Counties. Vazquez previously served on the Santa Monica City Council for over 10 years, including holding the offices of Mayor Pro Tempore in 2015 and Mayor in 2016.

The five-member California State Board of Equalization (BOE) is a publicly elected tax board that serves a significant role in the assessment and administration of property taxes.
