HORTON: Members and guests, let us 6 reconvene the meeting of the Board of Equalization. 7 Our next matter is a special presentation. 8 We would turn it over to Member Harkey. 9 MS. HARKEY: Thank you, very much, Members 10 and Chair and honored guests. 11 I'm honoring Ted Matthies today. Ted, I 12 will ask you to come down in a minute to the center. 13 But he works for me, advising my office about sales 14 tax matters. 15 It turns out that he's been doing something 16 even more honorable, he has been donating blood and 17 has become one of 15 blood donors in the United 18 States to donate more than 100 gallons of blood. 19 And he still has color and he still moves well. 20 The Red Cross estimates that Ted likely 21 saved more than 2,400 lives. 22 MR. HORTON: Wow! 23 MS. HARKEY: Ted started donating blood 24 in -- 29 years ago as part of a BOE mobile blood 25 bank donation program. 26 I understand only 38 percent of the people 27 in the United States are eligible to donate and less 28 than 10 percent actually do. So, the lives of many 3 1 depend on the generosity of a few like Ted. 2 And for the BOE in general, since 2009, 3 2,418 pints of blood have been donated by BOE 4 employees during our official blood drives. And it 5 equals just over 302 gallons. 6 So, I fully support the blood drive program 7 and I want to congratulate all of those of you who 8 have participated in the worthy cause that saves so 9 many lives. 10 And now I'd like to present my award to 11 Ted. Ted, if you would come down? 12 Yes, not only is this gentleman an expert 13 on sales and use tax issues -- and he's been 14 fabulous constituent rep for my office, working out 15 of the San Diego office and actually handling my 16 whole district, which is San Diego, Orange, 17 Riverside and Imperial and the bottom portion of San 18 Bernardino. So, he's been all over and traveled 19 well. 20 But this is for something different. It is 21 his resolution -- here it is. You see how pretty 22 that is? 23 Okay, I will -- I will read it, 24 "WHEREAS, Ted Matthies has become one 25 of the 15 blood donors in the United 26 States to donate over 100 gallons of 27 blood; and 28 WHEREAS, Ted Matthies has been been a 4 1 Board of Equalization employee since 2 1986 where he started donating blood 3 29 years ago as part of a BOE employee 4 effort at the mobile blood bank donation 5 center in the office parking lot; and 6 WHEREAS, Ted Matthies has continued to 7 donate blood and platelets to the 8 San Diego Blood Bank every two weeks 9 for an hour and a half demonstrating an 10 exemplary level of commitment and to 11 accomplish this honorable level of 12 contribution; 13 WHEREAS, Ted Matthies has donated enough 14 blood that, based on the Red Cross's 15 estimation, he has saved over 2400 lives; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, for over 20 years Ted Matthies 18 has been an active member of the bone 19 marrow donor registry and an active 20 participant of annual walk to fight 21 multiple sclerosis; and 22 WHEREAS, Ted Matthies is a San Diego 23 State alumni -- alumnus and has been a 24 San Diego County resident for over 30 25 years. Ted resides in Poway with his 26 wife and dogs: Therefore be it 27 RESOLVED, that we, the Members of the 28 Board, do hereby extend to Ted Matthies 5 1 our sincere and grateful appreciation 2 for his dedicated community and public 3 service to the California State Board 4 of Equalization and to the State of 5 California." 6 Congratulations. 7 I read, now you speak a little bit -- just 8 a little bit. 9 MR. MATTHIES: Well, actually, it's easier, 10 you know, not sitting before the Board and having to 11 speak. 12 But thank you. Thank the Board for this 13 resolution or -- yeah, resolution -- I got that 14 right. 15 And I just want to say to all of the people 16 that have donated blood, thank you. And if you 17 haven't and you can become one of the 10 percent, 18 please do. It will save lives and may save a life I 19 somebody in room. So, please go out and donate. 20 And thank you. 21 MS. HARKEY: Thank you very much, Ted. 22 MR. HORTON: Discussion, Members? 23 Member Runner. 24 MR. RUNNER: You know that's just an 25 incredible commitment. 26 And, you know, as I was reading through the 27 statistics and, you know, it's one thing to do 28 something good for a little bit and then get on to 6 1 something else, it's another one to just kind of 2 stay focused. 3 And, so, congratulations. MA: Thank you. 9 I tried giving blood many, many years ago 10 and, unfortunately, I have hepatitis B from my 11 mother and am prevented from giving blood. 12 But I appreciate everyone who does. Blood 13 is always needed. 14 Just thank you for all you do. 15 MR. HORTON: So many lives, so little 16 blood.
