HORTON: Ms. Richmond, what's our next 6 matter? 7 MS. RICHMOND: Our next matter is a special 8 presentation. We have a Governor's Employee Safety 9 Award presentation. 10 MS. BRIDGES: Good afternoon, Mr. Chairman, 11 Members. 12 Today we take special time to honor our BOE 13 employees who received the Governor's Employee 14 Safety Award. We all know that small acts of 15 kindness often make all the difference. 16 Certainly for the five employees we honor 17 today, they had no idea when they came into work on 18 a midsummer day in 2013 that their small acts of 19 kindness and quick thinking under pressure would not 20 only make a difference, but save a life. 21 Here is their story. As Dina Taruso, 22 Michael Matlock, LeeAnn Whisenhunt, Troy Elliott and 23 Joseph Zingg were working at their desks in the 24 Centralized Collection section, a co-worker was 25 noticed lying on the floor in a cubicle. The 26 co-worker had no pulse. 27 Immediately Dina, Michael, LeeAnn, Troy and 28 Joseph used the emergency protocol, called 911, and 3 1 began CPR and chest compressions to try to revive 2 the employee. 3 Then they initiated the use of the 4 defibrillator machine. The readings from the 5 defibrillator indicated the employee was not 6 breathing. The team continued CPR until the CHP and 7 paramedics arrived and assumed the care of the 8 employee. 9 The quick, decisive actions by these 10 individuals helped save the employee's life. So, 11 the Governor's Employee Safety Award, which is 12 signed by the Governor, is now respectfully 13 presented to those BOE employees -- Dina Taruso, 14 Michael Matlock, LeeAnn Whisenhunt, Troy Elliot and 15 Joseph Zingg. 16 Joseph Zingg could not be with us today, so 17 Ron Toddy, or Tatti, will be accepting the award on 18 his behalf. 19 I ask those employees to please come 20 forward. 21 (Applause.) 22 MS. RICHMOND: We'd like for the Members to 23 come down for a photo. 24 MR. HORTON: Thank you. 25 MS. BRIDGES: And, so, one to each one of 26 you? I present to you -- 27 MR. And 9 it's -- you know, it's always comforting, I think, 10 for any of us working in a work place to know that 11 there are people willing to step and use the skills 12 that they've acquired and, in this case, save a 13 life. 14 Congratulations, thank you. 15 MR. HARKEY: I just think it's fascinating 18 that you knew what to do and so fast. 19 And, so, I think that was obviously really 20 good training, preparedness. Who would have known 21 that would have happened? But you were prepared and 22 you did it. 23 And I want to thank you very much. I'm 24 sure many of us will feel more comforted knowing 25 you're around. 26 MR. HORTON: Member Ma. 27 MS. MA: No, just congratulations and 28 thank you for your service. 5 1 MR.
