Consumers and Merchants — Know Your Tax Rate in Riverside County!

Sacramento – Nine cities within Riverside County have a sales and use tax rate of 8.75 percent: Cathedral City, Coachella, Hemet, Indio, La Quinta, Menifee, Palm Springs, Riverside, and Temecula. Every other city in Riverside County, and every unincorporated area of the county, has a sales and use tax rate of 7.75 percent.

Six of the nine cities – including the City of Riverside – saw their rates change on April 1, 2017, due to voter-approved, one-percent sales tax increases. Riverside County's rate, however, did not change. Businesses should collect the sales tax based upon the address where they are making taxable sales. If you are shipping or delivering taxable items into Riverside County you need to know the proper rate to collect and report on your return so it is allocated correctly.

To find the correct tax rate for your area or business location, visit www.boe.ca.gov, click the Find a Sales Tax Rate by Address button located under the Log-in button, and enter the address as prompted. You are encouraged to use this sales tax rate lookup tool since, in some instances, the city you use for your mailing address may differ from your actual location.

If a consumer is charged the wrong sales tax rate at a business, they should return to that business and ask for a refund of the amount they were overcharged. Businesses that have collected too much tax are required to return it to their customers or pay it to the state. They cannot keep excess sales tax that they have collected.
