Tax Help for Grocers

California's robust grocery industry is vital to the state's job market and economy. Unfortunately, doing business in California has become increasingly difficult. To be successful, it's important for business owners to know not only their tax obligations but also their rights and the resources available to help them succeed.

My goal is for business owners to pay the right amount of tax owed—not too little, but also not too much. The best way to achieve this is through voluntary compliance. Most taxpayers want to do the right thing, but sometimes they need help to understand their obligations.

To better assist you, the BOE offers a tax guide for grocery stores that offers tips on getting started, basic information on industry topics, reporting methods, and links to resources that address topics specific to grocers.

Additionally, I hosted a "Tax Help for Grocers" telephone townhall on April 30 with the California Grocers Association to discuss sales and use tax issues that affect grocery and convenience store owners. In case you missed it, here is the audio recording.
